In this new Craigslist game we will be two very similar cars against each other, one restored and one that needs some work, to see which one is the more desirable purchase. Lets see if this takes off. Tonight we will pit two classy 50's wagons against each other. Starting with the restore we have a very desirable 1957 Chevrolet Wagon, 4 doors and orange, has an auto but it needs a new trans so maybe a swap, also needs body and floor work. It also has almost no interior.
Price: $6,000 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Option 2 is a less desirable year in the 1955 but way more desirable as it is a 2 door. This resto-mod is described as 95% complete with all the finishing parts coming with the sale, but it seems like it may have lost some of its original charm under the new bits.
Price: $24,000 !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
So, restore or restored?

Being a guy who loves projects, I'll almost always vote restore on these polls. That said, from a financial perspective, it's almost always more feasible to buy the restored version. Unless you run a shop that employs a handful of talented people, can keep a lot of the work in house, and can crank out projects in relatively short time spans, you won't be able to beat the price of a restored vehicle.
But I'd take the 4 door unrestored Bel Air wagon every day of the week.

Option 1, unrestored. I can use the money I save to build it up the way I want instead of spending additional money to change the things I don't like on the restored one.

Why is a '55 less desirable? '55s and '57s always vie for attention. It is the '56 that gets lost in the mix.

The 57 Chevy is normally considered the perfection of the iconic mid-50's model run. They also demand the most money IIRC.

Conversely, the '55 was a revelation over what it replaced. Like I said, the '56 is the red-headed stepchild in the mix.

I say option 1, make it driveable and then leave it as is. That looks like it would be expensive to fully restore, and I'd rather just enjoy driving it. When it gets restored people are too scared to do what it was meant to do…drive. I'm not a fan of trailer queens.

The blue one would look a lot better without those anachronistic wheels and tires.
